Interoception refers to the perception of internal body states. It concerns our ability to explicitly and implicitly detect (and thereby regulate and control) our organ systems, including our heart, lungs, stomach, and muscles. It is increasingly viewed as an important element that helps connect the body and the mind. For example, several studies have demonstrated that interoception plays an important role in memory processes and decision-making (Dunn et al., 2010; Werner et al., 2010). It has also been shown that interoceptive awareness is important for athletes who are seeking optimal performance, as it connects the distress of inner states to the goal of achieving and maintaining homeostasis (Philippe & Seiler, 2005).
Homeostasis is any self-regulating process by which an organism tends to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are best for its survival. If homeostasis is successful, life continues; if it's unsuccessful, it can lead to disaster or death of the organism.
In the context of physical activity, one of the best known interoceptive concepts is that of perceived exertion during exercise, which Prof Gunnar Borg (e.g., 1962) considered a summation or integration of a multitude of contributory interoceptive cues from a variety of sources, such as the cardiovascular system (e.g., heart pounding), respiratory system (e.g., breathlessness), muscular system (e.g., tension), stomach (e.g., aches), and skin (e.g., sweating). Recent models of exercise regulation recognize the importance of this overall gestalt perception to decisions about whether to continue or terminate exercise.
Soma NPT allows coaches to combine interoceptive awareness with cognitive training to create a challenging mind-body environment for an athlete, forcing them to detect and respond to changing conditions. Soma NPTs cardiovascular exertion mode is a performance-related biofeedback mode where the athlete needs to reach a certain Heart Rate (HR) to select the answer for the cognitive task. As simple as this sounds the athlete must pace themselves during the entire cognitive task and apply strategies when the time comes to exert themselves to respond to the cognitive task. Cardiovascular Exertion Mode works by taking the athlete’s live Heart Rate (HR) and giving the athlete a target HR response. The athlete has two options, to slowly grind to the target heart rate to respond to the cognitive task or to exert themselves fully to respond to the task and recover as fast as possible between each stimulus. This training quickly becomes hard for an athlete as Soma NPT is continuously taking the current live HR and requiring a heart rate range to respond to the cognitive task.
Cognitive Tasks 3 min, 5 min, or 10 min in duration, the athlete must raise their heart rate for left button responses by + 2-5% and right button responses by + 6-10% relative to their live HR.
Cognitive Tasks 20 min or 30 min in duration, the athlete must raise their heart rate for left button responses by + 2% and right button responses by + 5% relative to their live HR.
